Lincoln’s birthday this year coincided with the discovery of the 26 men, and the eight year old girl whose bodies washed into the Spanish beach in Lanzarote…
Happy Anniversary is not but these are the sacrificies to the old Gods of a divided humanity.
An old message from Abe the beard, who said that it was the duty of the people never to entrust to any hands but their own the preservation of their liberties, must now be heeded.
And that was what these men were doing by sailing towards Europe… They didn´t fail, they just never made it. They are the just the latest martyrs of the social divide that delegates some humans to the position of slavery and some others to the position of a strong passport. Largely due to an accident of DNA and birth… we divide humanity.
But how can we assign a higher value to one human being than another because thay don´t have the right passport?
Even largely apolitical people like my friend Bill Gates, say that all human Life is equally worth…
But modern politicians have no concept of this. Especially the European Socialists mired in their own morass.
Lincoln started a social revolution as soon as he entered into office.
Marx sent a letter congratulating Lincoln on his re-election in 1864, amid a belief that took root among European socialists and social democrats that Lincoln stood for the rights of the working classes too. These socialists perceived American slavery largely through the lens of the European class struggle but they failed to bring their ideas to the marketplace of democracy for quite a while. Even today those same Euro socialists fail the test of applying human values to all but they nartrowly see their own people as the only recipients of their XL large ideas.
Lincoln, who rebuilt his nation, and healed the divide of slavery paid dearly for his social innovations. But even so he has inspired reformers everywhere as well. Words of praise for American democracy are only relevant to the time. Lincoln helped.
The Gettysburg Address became popular all over the world as most educated and democratic people know the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
Lincoln was born in poverty to poor parents. He lived in a log cabin without heat and walked long to go to school and learn the essentials that served him best. Yet it was these qualities and the origin of his thought that mattered when it came time to choose. He always chose the difficult path and the road less travelled. Not only he became a strong statesman through fiery oratory, honesty, diligence and hard work, but he rose to be the president of the US and the one man who freed the slaves. He freed the human bondage and thus changed history for all of us. All his battles are hard-won and today when we face the world we need to remember the unity of men. Those economic refugees washing off into the shores of Europe and America, they represent human bondage attempting top free themselves. We need to give them a hand. They are the best and the brightest of their respective nations, tribes and families and as true pioneers thay want to change their lives. Let´s give them a hand.
They are men, women and children eager for the pursuit of hapiness and human fulfilment. Let´s give them a hand.
Old Abe that´s what he would have done too.
