Peace and Cooperation are now back in fashion – A new wind blows from Washington

Speaking at the United Nations, Obama yesterday said that the US wants to be met halfway with decent nations across the globe. Not only is good and ethical but necessary and  deserved to be met with a commitment from all other nations to start helping in the partnership of nations that the UN represents.

“Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world’s problems alone,” Obama said in his first speech before the UN’s General Assembly.

The US President’s address underscored the Democratic administration’s broader  message that the days of unilateralism are over A new wind blows from Washington and that wind carries a spirit of cooperation and international friendship and Peace. This is Obama’s guiding principle.

In return, he emphasized, other nations must step up and lend a hand in combatting everything from poverty and nuclear proliferation to climate warming and terrorism.

“Make no mistake: This cannot be solely America’s endeavor,” Obama told the General Assembly hall, filed to the rafters with heads of states and delegates amongst them the Environmental Parliament delegates and ambassadors. A standing room crowd filled the hall, which included the US Secretary of State Ms Hillary Clinton and the First Lady of the US, Ms Michelle Obama.

Obama was relaxed and spoke softly:

“We have sought in word and deed a new era of engagement with the world; Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for global challenges.

Doing nothing, will only assure a dangerous status quo of pessimism, extremists “sowing terror,” genocide, melting ice caps, “persistent poverty and pandemic disease.”

PS:  Thank You.

PS2: It is the first time a US President addresses the UN security council in such a friendly peaceful tone… Not only it is refreshing but it is working miracles too.  Wish upon yourself the change, and change yourself,  if you want your enemy to change…

PS3: I want to point out that already the Peace policy of Obama paid Dividents. The intractable Russian President promised to put strong support behind the UN sanctions against Iran’s newly revealed weapons grade plutonium enrichment facility and nuclear ambitions program. Even Iran’s president Ahmadinejad apparently is listening to the changing wind and offered his conciliatory admission to the Atomic Commission regardless of his rumblings behind the podium for his own public consumption at home. He is an engineer after all and a scientist to boot. A rational and calculating human being who knows when the chips are down. If he knows poker is not known but I suspect he does because he chose the time to show his hand. However, I know he plays chess. And now he can show us that he has the capacity for rational action and rational moves as well as having the capacity of own listening to his people’s voices first and foremost. After he hears them, only then he needs to listen to the rest of the world inviting him in. They both want Peace and all of us want Help to solve the inexorable global problems. Our enemies are outside the focus of the human race and the nation states squabbling between religions, neighbours, ideologues, co-religious and fraternal conflicts and competitions…. We need clear leadership to move out of this moral and ethical morass.

PS4: A foot note for Ahmadinejad: Obama enjoys higher approval ratings inside Iran than Ahmadinejad… That  should give him pause and something to think about when he calculates his next move in the old Persian game of Chess diplomacy. It’s the world my friend and don’t forget, that the hospitable people of Iran always understood that. It is a grave mistake to cut them off the world. They will not forgive you for that….

PS5: Russian President Medvedev exhibited a rare sreak of vigour and independence from the Kremlin and Putin by choosing to go along with Obama and Sarkozy in forcing Iran to reveal it’s intentions and to comply with the Atomic Energy Commission. Russia now for the first time will join the other rational nations of the UN security council, including China and the UK; and thus force Iran to engage the community of nations and the UN. Iran must take the straight and narrow road of International Diplomacy and honest good government.  Obama’s policy of international cooperation and peace paid hard dividents already; as seen by the admission of Iran to it’s enrichment facilty and the possibility to face real and meaningful sanctions if it fails to integrate with the world community as a valuable partner and not a lunatic pariah like Gaddafi.

PS6: The other benefit from Obama is that all the results are multi-stakeholder efforts. This engagement policy and the multiparty agreement to force sanctions on Iran is a real breakthrough. It is a great social, political and peace generating process that Obama shows How is done.

PS7: Lastly and perhaps most importantly, it  is also an environmental idea to engage in cooperation amongst the various nations. Not only because the burden you share is lighter. But in exercising this multiparty agreement and cooperation platform it becomes easier to reach global agreements and forestall the possibility of negative outcomes. In these trying times and as we look forward to a Copenhagen accord; filled with hope, we need this kind of leadership. Obama can provide the global leadership needed to reach a just and fair agreement for Climate Change and all the multi stakeholders in Copenhagen.

We’ll be there… supporting these efforts.

We wish You from our heart:

 Good Luck and Godspeed.
