One climate for one humanity – Leaders agree – What about You?
Christmas has brought Peace all over the climate…. accord.
Even the rich-poor disputes about the environment have been forgotten.
The fights between the various blocks in Copenhagen – those that dominated the two-week climate conference and almost blocked any deal at all – have almost disappeared after the summit.
More than anyone else physicist Merkel understands the environmental issues of the day. As a leader in her day job she also worked hard to reach an agreement for nations to mitigate their environmental impact.
“This breakthrough lays the foundation for international action in the years to come,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the German news.
“Copenhagen is a first step toward a new world climate order, nothing more but also nothing less. Those who are only putting Copenhagen down are helping those who want to blockade rather than move forward,” the chancellor added.
And even both China and the US, the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, aplauded the outcome of the historic UN climate conference in Copenhagen this December.
“With the efforts of all parties, the summit yielded significant and positive results,” Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in a statement after the Copenhagen Accord was assaulted by all pundits.
And the US President Barack Obama said that this COP15 Accord breakthrough laid “the foundation for international action in the years to come”.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a “good deal” and said that ”India had upheld the interests of developing nations and their national sovereignty”
Now these are all very smart people with advanced degrees and loads of energy behind them to propel them in positions of leadership within their countries – and still find it difficult to be optimistic. But they try their best to reconcile the realities of demanding economies and people’s basic interests… in contrast with Nature.
They don’t think of how to reconcile the natural world with the physical demands of human societies, but they don’t even consider the possibility to live in harmony. It is seemingly unattainable – Yes?
Not True.
Not when you consider humanity as a single organism – with the same overall profile.
Why none of our leaders talks like that? They all say interesting things…. but still fall far short of the mark.
However President Nasheed of Maldives said it best when He declared that none can ask others to make emission cuts and change their societies if they themselves cannot or aren’t willing to make the same.
This is the of talk – like a knife that cuts both ways; and also joins the false divisions between rich and poor nations.
For in the eyes of the earth we aren’t divided at all but a single species…. - One of the billion of species that come and go in her long existence. And please remember that 99.99% and more of all the species that have existed on this very earth – have gone extinct.
So if we go that route – no worries we’ll not be innovating anything. We’ll tread the common path.
And maybe that the earth is but a bridge for passage of life but not a place to build a home onto – Who knows?
