Canton is good - Guangzhou on the whole and neighboring Yunnan are good places – and Seattle is even better in natural beauty, but all three places have loads of seriously outspoken fans of Geoengineering and Nuclear Power spoiling the air.
But California takes the cake only because they hold their annual conference there – near by Monterrey Bay – at the Asilomar International Conference on Climate Intervention Technologies. That’s Geo Engineering for the uninitiated. Of Course this conference is the brainchild of the Livermore National laboratories crowd of concerned scientists. You know the good folks who develop nuclear weapons mindful for your particular health and well being and curing you all of any fears you didn’t know You had. It’s the ”Livermores” who cause us angst and yet like the ”Supreme scientists,” it’s them who strive to provide ”intelligent and practical” ways of solving the seemingly intractable problems of this earth – preferably by nuking somebody. Preferably somebody foreign small and brown or yellow who speaks a non Indo European language strain. Or in the event that they can’t identify a target – they will nuke anybody or just to be sure – everyone.
Hell – they want us to nuke the fucking atmosphere for Chrissake…
And You know that they are serious because that’s what they know and make. Nukes. They make nukes, by the boatload… Get it?
A bunch of awkward white boys who can’t dance. It’s the revenge of the nerds who couldn’t get a date throughout high school and college and stayed virgin till after the PHD, when they promptly married the first slut that came along looking for a safe harbor to ply her trade… Yep that’s it. They want revenge on a big scale now.
It’s sad, that those Livermore invalids who can’t dance with the Earth’s whimsy, folly and chaotic beauty, want to rape her wholesale.

Nuclear research scientists and problem solving nerds, seeking topical asymmetrical solutions for the Atmospheric climate warming.

Equals: Nuke the hell of the atmosphere to stimulate nuclear winter and thus cool the said atmosphere. Never mind the people. Never mind the species sharing this rock with us. Never mind that’s how the freaking dinosaurs perished 120 million years ago… These invalids, are seriously propose this with elaborate power points and data graphs…
Are they on crystal meth? or just cheap crack? Maybe this conference should be called the American Psycho convention of people pretending to understand humility and earth science but for health & safety reasons it should be held in Bellevue, in a white padded room.

And in their hasty pursuit of quick fixes and band aids, they abhor human rights, social conventions, international laws and treaties they violate, consultation with the world’s bodies and any kind of justice that might stand in their way. They dismiss all such ”rubbish” quickly and vocally in their haste; if it were to stand as an obstacle to their ambitions. Ambitions such as seeding the clouds and the oceans and the earth with all manner of toxic and nuclear junk that might make the earth completely uninhabitable and make us all ”emigres” to Mars or thereabouts. It’s good for those who believe in second comings and goings and the revenge of the soul…
It’s Bad though for me, the rest of us, you and your children.
It’s no wonder this same group of geeks pursues Nuclear energy vehemently and the urgent need to settle a base in Mars as soon as possible. They say it is an urgent priority.
The scary part is that they are sure that the regulatory and business outcomes of the debate on geo-engineering will bring a power of good to this world and all of it will be done with the consent of the world rather than by unilateral action. Needless to say this consent will be achieved the same way that the people of Nagasaki conceded to be atom bombed. Same as their relations of Hiroshima.
Naturally this is a closed – by invitation only – secure conference but I still managed to skip inside and glean some gems of wisdom from an ocean – of pseudo religious scientific folly – reminiscent of an Evangelical meeting in a big tent in Texas with firebrand ”heal You” kind of preachers. I was in Nor Cal, so had ample opportunity to miss my plane and visit the ”Geekdom come” to get a flavour of science boy scouts gone bad. Like girls gone wild, these guys are scary. A bit of science porn for the initiated sheltered up in Monterrey.
I would only hope the Feds are monitoring this…
It’s sufficiently scary and it would be even scarier if it weren’t so funny with the crowd of engineers uncomfortable within their clothes and their human skin. The typical proliferation of plastic pocket protectors full of Biros and oversize calculators and the requisite tape over the nose bridge eye glasses. Many legions of them rose up from the woodwork… and they all assembled in a Zombieland of daft android like beings. Too bad the base on Mars isn’t ready yet. We could ship the whole lot off, make them useful and also man the forward bases. At least this way if aliens discover them they will conclude there is no intelligent Life form on earth and they won’t come looking for any trouble.
And yet these androids, even have a good enough base of other geeks and reformatted scientists hoping to introduce perfection and security back in the Climate world and they claim to save this planet – no less.
Nary a day goes by that the Geek squad in China and America doesn’t come up with a solution to whatever is wrong with the atmosphere, or the planet or the climate or the people ad infinitum…
Some serious runaway cases of Greenwash are afoot and their geeky mouths running atwitter…
Take for example the simplest of Geo engineering approaches: I’m neither a fan, of stratospheric aerosol injection nor the sulphates in the stratosphere nor the other Micro-engineering and Macro-engineering methods that come up all the time as Panacea for all that is wrong with our climate and environment.
But most intelligent people recognize there are no magic bullets, no Panacea for the planet besides cooperative efforts to limit our emissions.
All the prominent figures in climatology, all earth scientists of note and all of the scientific contributors to the IPCC reports, which, in 2008, shared the Nobel Peace Prize, don’t think Geo-engineering could serve as an insurance policy in the event of abrupt climate change.
They ask me all the time about my thoughts of Geo engineering… as a stop gap measure for the abrupt climate changes. Like a Plan B or something daft like that.
My answer is typically:
What abrupt climate changes are you worried about?
Well, my usual ”scardy cat” fearful of sea level rises, friends; ask what if the Greenland ice sheet starts to go far faster than anticipated?
What if it tips all together?
Would it make sense then to decrease temperatures in the
hopes of stopping that process, quickly, since we’re talking about something
like a twenty-foot rise in sea levels?
What would the ramifications be?
Could they be so serious that we could justify geo engineering solutions ?
I think a much more important thing is to agree and say that sea levels will rise inevitably…
And if the DoD wants to explode nukes in the upper stratosphere – so be it. Those taking that decision lightly should be tried for genocide as the effects will be akin to a global genocide. Yet today, serious ”military intelligence” type scientists propose this. Without any compunction or thoughts of Human Rights for the rest of us. These sheltered boys don’t habitate this real Life but someplace in Second Life.
Wanting to use Geo engineering to prevent the nasty effects of the warming planet and the Climate change, is not just bad science but it is a daft mode of thinking as well.
Even on a good day and assuming Geo Engineering works as promised it will be a nightmare of unequaled proportion of who and how it will be decided and whose human rights are to be affected and how. How is my right to breathe Clean Air goes to be reconciled with the wish of the Geo engineering types to spread toxic shit up in the atmosphere? Well – they say – it is a method of preventing the nasty side effects of a warming climate…
I say: What the Geo types call ”Preventing,” is just delaying the worst effects.
All this geoengineering is just delaying the inevitable. It’s gonna go sooner or later. Can we adapt and mitigate? Can we change our stripes? Can we on the final analysis alter our path?
Or will we continue towards self-immolation, like the Buddhist monks of Saigon before anyone really wakes up?
But the Geo Engineering asocial and asexual types and the nuclear energy crowd, scream loudly:
Wouldn’t it at least buy us some time?
But I ask You:
What are we doing right now – matters to me far more – if the whole strategy of the Geo engineering and the nuke heads, is just to buy us some time.
If we just continue to squander our momentum, our smarts and our natural inertia towards evolutionary change – thinking that we have some obscure weapons program called Geo engineering – I won’t support it.
I will actually come out vehemently against it. We have enough science to invest in proper engineering of reversing the trends and our habits by simply focusing to live within our means and by building the Renewable Energy infrastructures along with the Clean Tech we are developing and deploying.
Folks, it’s time to wake up: Geoengineering, isn’t science fiction anymore. It’s a fiction but it has entered the world of rogue science. Fringe scientists advocating their own version of wishful thinking, instead of procuring data streams that can be analyzed by others and engaged. In an imminent haste to save the world they want us to buy the proverbial pig in the poke…
And they are rather convincing to the ones who are not scientifically aware. Their Y2K parallels are obvious. A profit motive and an all be damned attitude, is the undercurrent running through it. Both China and America on the highest levels have listened and are engaged in it. If the Military intelligence – is considered highest level [doubtful] and their space programs are engaged – that is a sign of imminent troubles.
Geoengineering has it’s greatest drawbacks besides the fact it isn’t working, in the unintended and largely unknown side effects. The unknown isn’t just the modeling that hasn’t been done for any of the nuclear proliferation or for the Geoengineering so called methods, but it is the clear stipulations of wanting to halt the change necessary for our movement away from the Status Quo.
Let alone the laws of unintended consequences that the nifty and neat as gay boys, never want to consider…
It is these laws, are what might make us drop cats off of airplanes in tiny parachutes or is it cockroaches who will be flying? Can’t remember anymore.
Yet in these days of Pesah – the ten plagues should be remembered. In a parable of the past it is the people wishing these upon ourselves. We invite disaster having failed to heed the proper word of the Lord – Environment – Nature – fill in your own blanks here. Not hearing God’s word to let go of our evil ways and free the people – like modern Egyptians – we’ll suffer the consequences. It was a form of Geo engineering the Pharaoh was practising… by moving a large national population to work in irrigation projects and large infrastructure for the natives lazy enough to change their profligate ways.
Any parallels with any living national entities and the most consuming and polluting nations of this earth are purely coincidental – if not – accidental.
So the countries most unwilling to change – China and the US – are the ones also most willing to spread Nuclear Energy for power generation and to engage in large scale Geo engineering. It so happens that these two nations are also governed by elites that are protected and not willing to change.
Thus blame the Status Quo again or just go ahead and embrace change both for our energy pollution and for our wish to alter the Status Quo. It is a Social problem as well as a societal one before it is a Geo- engineering one.
Please meditate upon this for a bit.
Geo engineering is no longer science fiction. It’s claimed capabilities are surely science fiction – but the desire and the will of the few loose screws – to screw us up, way more than what we’ve been screwed so far – is absolutely real.
I’ve spent enough time with these types of socially inept guys to really see where their ideas come from. A scientific observation of the taxonomy of the Geo engineering animus. These variant of the human species is utterly hopeless and prone to bouts of recurring depression. Unable to attract the opposite sex, they spent loads of time alone and in relative social isolation. They all have a deep dislike for the natural world. They are unable to handle emotions properly and surely unwilling to engage nature’s brilliantly chaotic and livid mess. Their need for security drives them to overcompensate in the wrong ways of success. They love Comics and Super heroes… They hate mosquitoes…
They are in short afraid of Nature and it’s ways.
So why Geo engineering now again? Because the Geeks need another rally? Another set of companies to boost Wall Street fortunes? Stupid Freakonomics proponents seeing Geo engineering as a modern day God isn’t enough.
Let’s stop and think for a moment.
Ask questions: Who decides for something that will alter the world for all of us? What mechanisms we have for this? What Social institutions are in place to manage the decision making process?
Simple direct questions first:
How do we test it?
How do we know that it would work?
The scientist’s responsibility is not just to propose wild ideas.
The scientist’s responsibility is to say:
How do we test them?
Theories abound – knocking them around – is the job of science.
Who and how is going to properly model the Geoengineering systems and how we shall discuss globally and not unilaterally the deployment of these systems?
What thresholds kick this in?
Our Environmental Parliament has several threshold measures – Berkeley Line is one of them – but what of others?
It’s important to just look at what is the last resort and never ever ignore responsible action before we get there…
It’s very American to want a quick fix, but the energy problem is the principal
challenge for humankind. Yet it is far more important to address the two energy problems: not just the squandering of energy, but also the imbalance in energy access across the world.
Similarly it’s very Chinese to admit in recognizing that nobody does anything to solve these problems and therefore it isn’t our problem either.
So in this way who is going to attempt a host of reasonable solutions for the problem of climate change ?
Why would one change their eating habits to reduce Cholesterol when they know – they’ve got a pill to take and it will sort them out – while still eating all the junk in the world… Same applies to the viagra consumers.
There is no solving the warming climate and the planet’s environmental problems with Geo engineering. We won’t even get a hard on…
There is no solving the problem with Nuclear Energy.
There is no solving the problem with Malthusian population controls. Ever since Thomas Malthus published his Essay on the Principle of Population in 1798, white people have been getting increasingly uptight about who’s doing the most reproducing. Geo engineering racist types use population as the sum of all their fears…
And in the final analysis, all these Geo engineering ideas are doing, is slowing down humanity’s reaction time. And even when applied they are just slowing down the symptoms and making it far more likely for us as humanity, to be unable to cope…
Unable to cope to such an extent from an overt reliance to Geoengineering, and thus be driven to this Civilization’s collapse.
Think about this next time you get a cup of coffee at your local Starbucks…
And if you happen to have this cup of coffee in China – look around You and see the faces – and remember that one in every four people there are likely to perish when the real Climate instability kicks in. China admittedly is far more insecure in the face of Climate changes than the US. And the Chinese minorities and fringe social groups are far more vulnerable to the Environmental impacts throughout their diverse lands and especially the poorest agricultural populations whose human rights are already trampled.
Perhaps that explains why the Politburo leadership of China and the Geek squad of the US are both keen on Geo engineering. And also the fact that these two countries are the number one and number two polluter in the world and are unwilling to change their profligate and errant ways waiting (or rather hoping) for a little blue pill of a magic bullet.
Sorry folks but that was the US position that was invented in Washington and the Pentagon. The oxymoron of Military Intelligence brought us Geo engineering first. Now it found a second Life through the Geeks and the Chinese. Only till yesterday, in the tail end of the bushie years, it was the main American Policy. The Chinese leadership simply adopted this in an act of Imitation of the errant ways of the US now that the mantle of number one producer of CO2 has come to Beijing.
And it is the extremities of this policy that seems to have now been adopted by the Chinese leadership aping the Chenney doctrine: ”Shoot your friends in the face and then blame them for it.” It was the obvious negotiating line of the Chinese team in Copenhagen.
It worked like a charm for all of us too – we all nurse the buckshot in the face now – half blind and full of pain looking for short term relief.
And if you happen to be in Africa drinking a cup of coffee, look around and remember that nine out of ten farmers are going to be unable to grow their food anymore and the attrition rate will be higher than 25% of the population…
But when in the American Starbucks, the reality is that some of the faces around You will perish too. Not just because of Climate Change but by our daft wish to make Nuclear energy, the De facto power source and the Geo engineering, the medicine for the winds and the atmosphere and the clouds and the earth.
Whatever these guys are smoking please don’t even try. It will make you a simple repetitive stoner, thinking brilliant things, that shouldn’t be exposed to the cleansing light of day.
Geo engineers always like to say of themselves that they are keen to save the people. Yet they hardly ever like people or nature. They are unable to cope with others in social settings…
I don’t understand, where does the saviour syndrome comes from? Reading too many Comics with super heroes saving the world is another explanation of why Geeks want to save the world with an overdose of drugs…
Everyone must love Superman. Right? Except that little issue with his evil twin, his shadow side, the Kryptonite and that there is no Antidote for it…
But on the real world, Geo engineering is also deeply racist.
Just to put it into perspective, Malthus was practicing Geo – Engineering as did Adolf fuckin Hitler and some other white bread boys suffering from Aspberger’s syndrome if not from a more serious case of Red Neckin.
And the above taxonomy classification extends to the crowd favouring nuclear power for all. They strive to make the energy sector even more complex and tech dependent, more expensive, more exclusive and available only for the powerful nations, WASPish and controlled in the hands of the Minnie Mes of this world. Their racist belief – to exploit and oppress the rest – is an obvious inescapable conclusion.
Good to remember this occasionally. Especially, now that the Geek squad again, has been unleashed, to propagate the virtues of the ”personal” nuclear reactor.
If the adverts are anything to go by – New Nuclear Energy of this decade – it will be safe, super secure and endorsed by Bill Gates. Ah, and lest I forget - it comes in small enough travelling reactor packages that – you can have them in your mobile home while vacationing to light up the countryside and keep the bears away.
But back on planet earth – it’s this kind of weapons size reactor – that will make all of our lives either a memory or a constant nightmare. Ask anyone who has lived through Nagasaki or Hiroshima and you’ll get the lowdown. Spread these ready made nukes around and lo and behold we can have our own ballistic missiles in the backyard. You don’t like your neighbor – nuke them. Simples.
As a global society we are trying to contain the nuclear club to a few countries and even threaten war against new contestants daily – but we willingly want to unleash – just to save the Geeks with a secure Nuclear Energy future.
Yet the Geeks are unperturbed by these pesky details and they go far to talk about it, having a personal vested investment interest in a small nuclear reactor – might be good for our health – and goes some way towards solving the energy crisis too.
You want some windex with that Bill? Maybe fries with this shake?
Or maybe Nathan needs to revisit the dinosaurs to remember the lesson about species collapse and extinction?
And our friend Xsia must go back to the countryside to reacquaint himself with nature again before being allowed to play with matches again. Or with Nuclear energy plants.
PC revolution for nuclear reactors isn’t exactly about information management and downloading porn and reaching each other through email. It is more like anyone bend enough, after a night of hard bingeing, will be able to take out the house, the neighborhood, the town, the city, the bloody state. That is… nuclear.

Yes – I admit – they can leave underground forever in the mountain mines with their art collections but what about the rest of us?

But being daft isn’t the exclusive province of the rich – but the follies of the super wealthy are magnificent, you must admit – even if only because they have more money to waste on PR and self aggrandizement.
Or it might be the Ides of March – that about this time of year – all the cook works wake up from hibernation and start dreaming up ways to screw us all up.
