Irene, an enormous hurricane is barreling down on the United States eastern seaboard, throwing millions of peoples’ lives into turmoil and threatening New York City itself.
And the media frenzy is all about the effects of the hurricanes but never about the root causes, as if we haven’t got hundreds of years of climate science and weather data to explain things…
We need to smarten up about things soonest, because according to scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it’s highly likely that hurricanes like Irene will increase in frequency and intensity as the climate gets hotter.
Irene itself might very well be proof of that in it’s ferocity at the beginning of the season with this being the warmest year on record in the warmest decade on record and certainly having experienced extreme freak weather all over the globe with unseasonable weather patters, monsoons out of whack, floods and droughts reversed and extreme hurricanes to boot — all over.
Am sure you can see the patterns here…
But watching the mainstream media, you’d never know climate change had anything to do with it. Watching the news seems like we are still in the Dark Ages – we know nothing – and we need to perform human and animal sacrifices to appease the Gods of the freakish weather if we want some relief. But science begs to differ and maybe time we shared the good news and the fruits of knowledge with our friends too.
Because now it’s urgent to help the American people understand basic climate science and make the connection between climate change and severe weather. Even more important it’s to show how our energy choices can impact the weather and cause climate change and global warming. More CO2 equals more global warming and that means more freak weather and extreme hurricanes as well as other devastating phenomena that disrupt people’s lives in catastrophic ways.
That’s the bargain we make every time we hit the gas pump at the petrol station and in our Life style we support the fossil fuel burning economy.
And if the people know and understand this then their government will respond properly as well without the debate becoming ideological but simply scientific.
Methinks, it’s time to retool and retech to get our energy from renewbles so we stop burning up this small planet but you must see it that way too and ask for change.
Positive change we seek because if you are really listening, then the effort is to allow the government to see the light of day and make the right choices for our energy future.
And in the eye of this coming storm we have an opportunity to protest in front of the White House this Monday the 29th against the most climate destructive Industry of fossil fuel burning ever. Join us to protest against the evil Tar Sands of Alberta and their pipeline to the American states.
The Environmental Parliament along with many other environmental organizations and leading climate scientists have condemned the Keystone XL Pipeline project which would bring 900,000 barrels of dirty oil from the Alberta Tar Sands to Texas refineries. Preeminent climate scientist and director of NASA’s Goddard Institute James Hansen has described the Alberta Tar Sands oil extraction development as a game-over proposition for climate change. On Monday the 29th he will address the continuing struggle against the ever increasing threat of anthropogenic climate change. Dr. Hansen will be participating in the protest against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline in Washington, DC on August 29th with religious leaders from all denominations, creeds and faiths and you are invited to a peaceful sit in on the Lafayette park in front of the White House.
Yours,
Pano
PS:
Come for the speeches, come for the fun, but most importantly come to defend your Life. Bring your family and friends. Bring your kids and pets. Come one and all together for this is a clarion call for Life and generational justice.
Because this form of civil protest and possible civil disobedience will not only earn you new classy friends and esteemed comrades in this age of FB fakery, but will also strengthen your resolve to fight for your children’s future and feel good about yourself.
Old Irene might as well justify her name – meaning Peace – by giving us an opportunity to peacefully defend this very fragile Earth climate and win a pivotal fight against the Tar Sands black death…
