Then why do we have such a hard time accepting our responsibility for the global warming?
Don’t we know that the first step to change is recognition of the facts and knowing ourselves?
Why is it that the smartest people in the world wallow in self designated ignorance? Why is it the American public exhibits this astounding level of disconnect from reality and scientific reason? Why can they not make the connection between the dirtiest fossil fuels, the carbon economy and earth damning climate change?
This enforced ignorance, reminds me of an old story… When the Catholic church controlled the experimentation, the flow and the acceptance of what constitutes fact, science, and even scientific reason, the real science suffered greatly along with peoples progress. Maybe even the dark ages can be traced upon this. Because all there was left was the iron dogma of the Christian faith and nobody could go against this even to the detriment of their own lives. And as it happens, dogma was, is and always will be patently false. Knowledge being a moving target and all…
And it was back then that Galileo Galilei could not even persuade European astronomy professors to peer into his telescope. Because they were fearful of what they would see that the Catholic Pope would disapprove. And in short the correct heliocentric view of the solar system and our world had to be delayed because of fear. And it was then that they feared to look through the telescope, afraid to discover that Jupiter’s moons did not go round the Earth but rather around Jupiter itself etc.
And even when Galileo had to recant his scientific observation because of fear of getting burned on the stake by the Holy Inquisition, he still knew the truth privately — only he could share it. Same as many scientists today who are afraid to voice their views about sudden ice collapse and corresponding sea level rises that their climate models predict – for fear of ostracism from the scientific community of Orthodox dogma that still holds the slow glacial change as sacrosanct.
But the reality and the observation of what happened in other ice domes’ sudden collapse – are proof of the fast, furious and sudden nature of the imminent collapse of the Greenland ice dome and the resulting global devastation this will bring. The arctic ice collapse is just the prelude. The real symphony starts when the Greenland ice collapses. It might very well be the Magnus Opus of this earth and the swan song of this species…
And the connections of this voluntary blindness to the Earth scientists keeping quiet is sad and treasonous to the cause of humanity — same like Galileo’s colleagues few hundred years ago kept us in the dark. Because those scientists today, who can clearly see, their negative scenarios and models of global warming darkest effects being validated in speedier and self reinforcing manner are keeping surprisingly quiet.
Same as is the fate of the world’s fast disappearing ice shelves and glaciers that many Climate & ice scientists and glaciologists prove beyond doubt. Only if someone bothered to press a button and look through on a biological sample put under mass-spectrometer to check out the age of biological carbon in willow tree branch retrieved from beneath the Greenland glacier and inside ancient ice cores — we would prove beyond doubt the violent collapse of the Hudson Bay ice dome. And that would help us see the fate of the Greenland glacier’s future. A dismal future seeing the glacier tipping whole into the ocean same like the Hudson Bay ice dome tipped suddenly whole into the ocean and caused the massive sea level rises, the amazing loss of life and the apocalyptic stories of floods prevalent in all of the world’ s religions and creation stories like that of Noah’s Ark.
History repeats itself for those who don’t learn. This issue is very important because massive global flooding cannot be prevented if e Greenland glacier collapses fast and furiously same like the old Hudson Bay icedome of the past.
And because simple experiments could prove this now in a certain way through observation of the content of ice cores taken from the ice and ocean floor in the last fifty years — we are again at the same impasse of the Western scientific community people refusing to do today – fearing the resulting wisdom – much the same that Galileo Galilei could not get them to do back then. To simply peer into his telescope in his own time before his trial in front of the Pope’s inquisitors.
I can understand fear for one’s Life can break a man… And Galileo loved Life same as all of us.
Except that now your Life and mine and everybody else’s just might depend on it.
