Mandela’s One piece of Advise

When we worked on setting up my first Democracy & Human Rights organization in Soweto back in 1990, I always sought and received Mandela’s wise counsel.

He always said this: ” Before trying to master others, be sure you are the master of yourself, and live like a tree”

He made a clear picture of a tree with outstretched hands; and this huge man – tall as a cedar and strong as a boxer – gave the sly smile he was known for…

Madiba said to me:  ”Be like a Tree with strong roots and open limbs reaching up to the sky…”

Yours,

Pano

PS:

To this day — I do remember this more than anything else from Mandela’s helping hand and wisdom.

Because when Madiba said to me, Be like a Tree with strong roots and open limbs reaching up to the sky…

He embodied that more than any man I know.

God Rest
